Reached via a causeway from Weymouth the Isle of Portland is steeped in maritime history and has plenty to see and do. Portland Harbour is home to a 16th-century coastal fort or you could visit the famous Portland Bill Lighthouse. You can explore the pirates graveyard Church Ope Cove a former smugglers hideout or visit the Castletown D-Day Centre. Portland has several quarries to discover and a host of wildlife to observe - Peregrine Falcons can be spotted round Portland and along the cliffs or try and spot dolphins in the waters surrounding the island. Portland Harbour is also famous for its sailing and water sports being home to the National Sailing Academy and was the site of the sailing events for the 2012 Olympic Games.
